RUD lifts the largest and heaviest lattice cage in Berlin

Is a 25-meter-long wire mesh cage challenging to lift and erect?

Given the cage’s length and inherent instability, detailed discussions were undertaken well in advance to assess load distribution, lifting points and the overall rigging configuration. The goal was not only to lift the structure, but to do so with absolute control and precision, minimising risk throughout every stage of the operation.

On March 29, the massive lattice cage was ready to be positioned, with two 22mm RUD VIP chain blocks (VCB) deployed to carefully lower the structure into place. What makes this suspension system particularly effective is its ability to allow the sling chains to move smoothly over integrated deflection rollers within the chain block. This design ensures optimal load distribution across the entire system, significantly reducing stress concentrations and enhancing overall lifting safety.

Each of the two VIP chain slings measured 10 metres and weighed 178 kilograms, highlighting the magnitude of the operation. The equipment itself needed to be robust enough to match the demands of the lift, reinforcing the idea that “gigantic loads require equally capable slinging solutions."

As Patrick Vollmer, Technical Sales at RUD, explained: “Often, a length of 25m and the resulting challenges are difficult to fully grasp. For comparison, the installed T-basket is roughly the length of a tennis court. Lifting such a long and inherently unstable structure safely is no easy task. Our VIP lifting gear and our VIP chain block provided a reliable and controlled solution for this complex lift.”

This project highlights not only the importance of high-quality lifting equipment but also the value of engineering expertise and planning when handling oversized and critical infrastructure components in high density environments.
