How Do You Choose the Right Heavy Vehicle Lifting Solution?

Heavy Vehicle Hoists · Choosing the Right Solution

If you ask us, "What's the best heavy vehicle hoist?", we'll probably answer with another question:

What are you trying to lift, and what challenge are you trying to address?

We've been having these conversations with Australian workshops, fleet operators and maintenance teams for decades. One thing experience has taught us is that no single lifting solution is best for everybody.

We've also learnt that the best decisions look beyond the purchase price to service quality and total cost of ownership: how well the equipment is supported, and what it costs to own over its working life.

RUD offers three different approaches: Australian-made Endurequip Portalift mobile hoists, Finkbeiner wireless hydraulic mobile column hoists and Finkbeiner HDS semi-scissor platform lifts. But we wouldn't start by choosing between them.

We'd start with your challenge.

What Happens When Your Heavy Vehicle Hoist Needs Servicing?

Don't leave this question until after you've bought it.

When people compare new equipment, they look at capacity, features and price. Once they own it, a different question matters:

How easy is this equipment to keep running?

Ask:

  • Who can service the hoist?
  • Are spare parts readily available?
  • What support is available locally?
  • What happens to our workshop if the hoist is unavailable?

Finkbeiner mobile columns are supported by an Australia-wide network of service agents and technicians. Endurequip's strengths are simplicity and straightforward serviceability. Dan Cross from DN Cross Transport explains why that mattered:

I value the simplicity of design and ease of maintenance. The Portalift hoists are simple to service, with spare parts easy to get.

The question isn't "Which technology has more features?" It's "Which ownership model suits our operation?"

What Does a Heavy Vehicle Hoist Really Cost Over Its Working Life?

A lifting system can stay in your workshop long after the fleet around it has changed.

So, look beyond the purchase price. Consider:

Purchase price + maintenance + downtime + productive life − residual value

Downtime is the cost that rarely appears on a quote. Every day a hoist is unavailable, vehicles wait and work backs up. Productive life matters too: Endurequip Portalift's chain-drive system can last up to 25 years, even with frequent daily use. Its durability is also one reason RUD is the exclusive supplier of Endurequip hoists to the Australian Defence Force, supporting vehicle maintenance requirements in barracks and for overseas deployment. We've also seen well-maintained Endurequip equipment retain value in the second-hand market.

Then think about your fleet:

  • Will vehicle weights change?
  • Will you need to accommodate different wheelbases or tyre sizes?

Finkbeiner mobile columns, for example, offer adjustable wheel forks for tyre diameters from 550 to 1,140 mm.

So don't only ask what equipment costs today. Ask what it needs to do, how long you'll own it and what value may remain at the end.

Do You Need the Lifting Equipment to Move Around Your Workshop?

Does the vehicle come to one dedicated lifting position, or does the equipment go to the vehicle? If flexibility matters, start with mobile column hoists.

Endurequip Portalift is the only Australian-made mobile heavy vehicle hoist. Designed and manufactured in Brisbane, it uses a chain-drive system and covers total capacities from 30 to 75 tonnes. We think of it as a proven Australian workhorse: straightforward to operate and service, and built for the demands of Australian workshops.

Finkbeiner offers wireless hydraulic mobile lifting, with adjustable wheel forks and columns that operate individually, in pairs or in groups.

Ross Martyr at Toowoomba Heavy Diesel faced exactly this challenge. His service pit was restricting capacity, and the business was having to reject work. He chose four Finkbeiner wireless hoists.

The Finkbeiner hoists are a game changer. We no longer turn away work, and we can manage workflow effectively.

Is It a Lifting Challenge or a Workshop Productivity Challenge?

Sometimes the conversation needs to become bigger than the hoist. With larger workshops, we ask where the bottlenecks are, what access technicians need and whether a dedicated lifting position makes sense.

That's where Finkbeiner HDS belongs. It's a semi-scissor platform lift available in 25, 35, 50 and 70 tonne variants, with floor and in-ground installation options. It's a different buying decision from a mobile column hoist:

Could changing the lifting system improve the way your entire workshop operates?

Who Needs to Be Happy With the Hoist Purchasing Decision?

Usually more people than you think:

  • Technician: Can I work around the vehicle safely and easily?
  • Workshop manager: Will it work with our bays, vehicles and technicians?
  • Service manager: Will it keep vehicles moving and minimise disruption?
  • Fleet or maintenance manager: Will it suit our vehicles as the fleet changes?
  • Procurement and management: What is the whole-of-life value for the capital invested?

In our experience, the better decisions happen when these questions are considered together.

Seven Questions to Ask Before Buying a Heavy Vehicle Hoist

  1. What vehicles are you lifting today?
  2. What might you need to lift in five or ten years?
  3. How does work move through your workshop?
  4. Does your lifting equipment need to move?
  5. Who will use, service and support it?
  6. How long do you expect to own it, and what will it cost over that time?
  7. Are you addressing a lifting challenge or a broader workshop productivity challenge?

Start With the Challenge, Not the Product

Tell us what you're lifting, how your workshop operates, where you're losing time and what your operation may need in the future. Then we can talk about the equipment.

Tell us about your workshop challenge. We'll share our expertise with you and provide you with the most suitable solution in the market.
