A Turning Point for Bus Workshops

Australia’s shift to electric and hybrid buses is transforming workshop requirements. Heavier vehicles, high-voltage systems and mixed fleets demand safer, more flexible maintenance solutions. Mobile column hoists offer a future-ready approach, improving efficiency, maximising space and enabling workshops to service evolving bus fleets with confidence.

Across Australia, the move toward electric and hybrid buses is gaining real momentum. Government policies, sustainability targets, and industry leadership from organisations such as the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) are driving this shift. State associations, such as BusNSW, are also helping by organising events such as the 2026 Australasia Bus & Coach Expo in Sydney on 15-16 July to showcase the latest in fleet innovation.

But as fleets evolve, so too must the workshops that maintain them. With fuel costs rising (at the time of writing), many operators are taking a hard look at their vehicles, and ABC News has highlighted how quickly the transition to electric vehicles is accelerating. This is not just about swapping engines, it is about embracing new policies, safety standards and operational changes.

The New Reality of Electric Bus Maintenance

Electric buses bring new challenges compared to diesel fleets, and it is worth understanding them if your workshop is preparing for the future. The Electric Vehicle Council, which is Australia’s national EV advocacy body, points out a few key differences between conventional and electric:

NHVR emphasises safe maintenance practices, stable vehicle loads, and compliance. All this underscores the importance of picking the right lifting equipment for modern workshops.

Why Lifting Equipment Is Now a Strategic Decision

Gone are the days when lifting equipment was just another tool. Today, it is central to workshop performance:

Fixed vs Mobile Hoists in Bus Workshops

As workshops prepare for the future, they need to reconsider traditional floor plans.

Choice of Fixed Hoists or Pits

Or Move to Mobile Column Hoists

Mobile hoists represent the shift toward modular, “future-ready” workshops that are flexible, efficient and ready for change.

Supporting the Transition to Electric Bus Fleets

Electric buses are not coming; they are already here.

Workshops need to be ready in three key areas:

  1. Future-ready: Able to handle heavier vehicles and evolving designs

Leading Your Workshop into the 2026 EV Era.

It’s 7:00 AM. A new electric bus rolls into your service bay. There is no rumble of a diesel engine, just the quiet hum of high voltage. Your lead mechanic looks at the chassis, then at your old, fixed hoist and realises the world has changed. The lift points are different, the vehicle looks heavier and he does not even know where to begin on safety.

Electric and hybrid heavy vehicles are not just on the way; they are already here. For Australian workshops, this shift is not about throwing away your tools; it’s about upgrading your way of operations. By 2026, the most successful workshops will be the ones with the most flexibility, not the tools or the mechanics.

Here are five steps to ensure your workshop does not just survive the transition but can lead it.

Step 1: Respect the New Heavy

In the diesel world, weight is constant. Of course, in some vehicles, there might be a few extra accessories that might increase the weight, but the weight range is always predictable. In the EV world, weight is a moving target. Battery packs, often mounted deep within the chassis, can make a vehicle significantly heavier and shift its centre of gravity in ways that a standard hoist will not be able to manage.

What can you do? Assess your current lifting capacity now. Portable heavy vehicle column hoists like Endurequip or Finkbeiner are popular in the EV era because they don't lock you into one position. Both hoists allow you to adjust your lift points vehicle-by-vehicle, ensuring that a $500,000 electric truck stays perfectly level and safe.

Step 2: Redefine the Safe Zone

High voltage systems bring a new kind of tension to the workshop floor. Even a routine brake job or suspension repair now requires a Safety First procedure due to high voltage for isolation procedures and exclusion zones.

What can you do? Create dedicated EV service bays with clear visual boundaries. Use lifting equipment that offers precise, synchronised control and clear feedback. When your team hears the solid click of hoists that are synchronised, they will feel confident that the hoists with the vehicle are safe.

Step 3: Choose Flexible Over Fixed

The days of being attached to the floor like a service pit or a fixed hoist are disappearing. As your fleet grows to include everything from hydrogen ready or electric buses and trucks, your floor plan needs to be fluid.

What can you do? Think of your workshop floor as a blank canvas. Portable heavy vehicle hoists allow you to reconfigure your entire layout in minutes. Whether you are servicing a long wheelbase bus today or a compact hybrid truck tomorrow, you will never have to turn a client away because the vehicle won't fit in the bay.

Step 4: Staff Training

Focus on awareness. Your mechanics don’t need to become electrical engineers, but they need to be EV ready. Due to the rapid technological changes, there is uncertainty in many workshops, but we need to replace that uncertainty with familiarity.

What can you do? Focus on awareness. Teach the team why hoist positioning is critical for battery safety and how to use custom lifting adaptors and ramps for new chassis designs. When a mechanic understands the why, the how becomes second nature.

Step 5: Prepare for the Workshop You Will Have in 2030

Buying equipment for today’s vehicles is not a great plan. Ask yourself the question - Are you buying for the diesel fleet of yesterday or the mixed energy fleet of tomorrow?

Preparing Without the Panic

Transitioning to electric and hybrid fleets does not mean starting from scratch; it means working smarter. By focusing on weight, safety and flexibility, you turn the 2026 deadline from uncertainty into a competitive edge.

The workshops that invest early in flexible portable heavy vehicle hoists and staff training will be able to transition better for the future.

Why do you need Workshop Accessories?

Safety is critical in any truck or bus workshop. The weight of the heavy vehicles can pose a risk if the right equipment is not used for lifting or hoisting. While heavy vehicle hoists are an integral part of the workshop for raising or lowering the vehicles, accessories can play an important part when combined with the hoists. We discuss why workshop accessories such as Vehicle Stands, A-Frame Trailer Adaptors and Small Wheel Adaptors can support any workshop and how they can enhance safety and optimise workflow.

Vehicle Stands

Vehicle stands act as a fail-safe support, preventing accidents if a hoist fails. In bus and truck workshops, they can be a safety net to avoid injury. Vehicle stands and ramps come under Australian standards AS/NZS 2538:2016, which mandate their design and safety. Vehicle stands can free up hoists for other vehicles and optimise productivity. Vehicle stands can provide easier maintenance access, such as tyre changes and brake repairs. Since they are adjustable, they can be set at any height, allowing comfortable access and reducing physical strain.

Feature Safety Benefits Convenience Benefits
Secondary Support Prevents collapse from hoist failure; Reduces crushing risk Frees up hoists for other vehicles/tasks
Adjustable Height Ensures vehicle stability during work; Supports working at a comfortable height Offers flexible working heights for various repairs
Stable Base Enhances overall vehicle stability; Prevents tipping or shifting Improves access for undercarriage work (tyres, oil, brakes, exhaust)
Clear Markings (Load Capacity, Warnings) Provides clear guidance for safe use; Prevents overloading Easy identification of safe use parameters
Robust Materials Withstands heavy loads; Ensures structural integrity Ensures long-lasting, reliable performance
Compliance with AS/NZS 2538:2016 Meets mandatory safety standards; Provides peace of mind Happier team morale

A-Frame Trailer Adaptors

Endurequip A-Frame Trailer Adaptors are available with ratings up to 12 tonnes and are compatible with 89mm and 111mm Kingpin sizes. They enable easy trailer lifting for brake and exhaust system repairs.

These adaptors allow the workshops to service a broader range of trailers using current hoists. They offer a safe solution without special adaptors. They are designed for ease of use and stability, ensuring safe lifting of trailers.

Small Wheel Adaptors

Want to service smaller-sized vehicles? Small Wheel Adaptors (SWA) can do the job. When fitted with SWA, your heavy vehicle hoists can lift smaller vehicles such as cars, small trucks and minibuses. With a capacity of 2 tonnes (when used as a pair), SWAs offer a cost-effective alternative to separate car lifts, enabling workshops to service mixed fleets and expand into general automotive repair.

Safety, Efficiency, and Compliance

Australian workshops are required to comply with health and safety laws and Australian Standards. Compliance can be beneficial in not just preventing accidents or injuries but also reducing legal liabilities. Regular inspections and preventive maintenance are paramount.

A well-organised workshop with accessories can boost productivity, service bay utilisation, and workflow. Your heavy vehicle hoists can service a wider range of vehicles and are also freed for continuous use. Accessories help with quick turnaround times, better quality work, and increased daily service capacity.

Choosing high-quality, certified equipment from Endurequip or Finkbeiner ensures integration with your heavy vehicle hoists. Your additional investment can yield returns in the long term by enhancing safety, improving morale and boosting profitability.

RUD Heavy Vehicle Hoists met with Ross Martyr, owner of Toowoomba Heavy Diesel, in April 2025. Established 19 years ago, Toowoomba Heavy Diesel operates from a purpose-built, spacious workshop on Spalding Street, Harristown, servicing trucks, earthmoving equipment, and heavy equipment.

Brett Beveridge, National Product Manager - RUD Heavy Vehicle Hoists, first contacted Ross when he expressed a need to install heavy vehicle hoists in his workshop. Ross was servicing trucks and heavy vehicles using a pit, but was considering upgrading to hoists.

"After 19 years in vehicle dealerships, I recognised the demand for trustworthy mechanics and efficient service," Ross explained. "Customers need minimal downtime to avoid business losses, which is why I started my own workshop."

Toowoomba has a significant truck industry and is a transportation hub with many heavy freight and agricultural companies servicing the Darling Downs region. Ross understood the need to have a spacious workshop with separate entry and exit doors, which meant less time to manoeuvre trucks that came in for repairs with the finished ones.

"My goal was quick turnaround for customers. This required me to think beyond a pit into innovative solutions," Ross stated. "The pit limited our capacity, forcing us to reject jobs. We needed alternative lifting options."

Consequently, Ross researched heavy vehicle hoists, prioritising wireless, battery-powered systems. This led him to the German-made Finkbeiner hoists. "It was a local acquaintance who recommended Finkbeiner. Their hydraulic wireless design, coupled with Brisbane-based service support, convinced me. After several lengthy discussions with Brett, I purchased a set of four Finkbeiner hoists"

Ross now utilises the Finkbeiner hoists alongside his existing pit, significantly increasing workshop capacity. This allows his team to work safely and efficiently on multiple jobs.

"The Finkbeiner hoists are a game changer," Ross remarked. "We no longer turn away work and can manage workflow effectively. Their ease of charging and simple operation optimises productivity. The built-in safety features ensure my team is safe when working under the vehicles."

"I recommend Finkbeiner to anyone seeking quality wireless heavy vehicle hoists. Their mobility frees up workshop space and boosts productivity. The adjustable wheel adaptors accommodate various wheel sizes and wheelbases, which adds to their versatility in servicing different-sized vehicles."

In an Australian heavy vehicle workshop, floor real estate is valuable. Fixed vehicle hoists can be inefficient as they occupy floor space even when not in use, hindering workflow and limiting workshop capabilities. Mobile truck and bus hoists offer a smarter solution, providing space-saving and flexible workshop layouts that boost productivity and safety.

Workshop Limitations of Fixed Hoists

Many older Australian workshops often use pits or fixed above-ground hoists, both of which create space limitations. Fixed hoists require dedicated bays around their lifting points. When a hoist is not in use, this bay remains idle, wasting valuable space. This inflexibility restricts workflow, particularly in workshops with limited space. Manoeuvring trucks and buses around fixed hoists can be difficult, requiring precise positioning and increasing the risk of minor accidents. Fixed hoists are also challenging in workshops that require adapting to different vehicle sizes.

Reclaiming Workshop Space

Mobile heavy vehicle hoists provide an ideal alternative to fixed hoists. Designed for portability, these hoists operate in synchronised pairs or sets to lift entire vehicles. Mounted on wheels or castors, mobile hoists can be moved around the workshop to the vehicle's location. After lifting, vehicles can be placed on stands, freeing up the hoists to lift other vehicles.

This mobility offers significant space-saving advantages. Workshops can move away from fixed bay layouts to dynamic, adaptable workspaces. Instead of fixed bays dictating workflow, floor space becomes flexible and adjustable to the vehicles being serviced and the tasks required.

Adapting to Australia's Diverse Workshop Demands

Mobile truck and bus hoists enhance workshop efficiency and productivity beyond space-saving. Below are some benefits of using mobile truck and bus hoists.

You might have seen the well-known slogan printed on trucks: "Without trucks, Australia stops". The rumble of diesel engines has always been the soundtrack of Australian highways, and diesel trucks have long been an integral part of the economy, moving goods across the country's length and breadth.

As vehicle manufacturers display their latest electric vehicles, the question arises - How will the heavy industry change, and what challenges will the future hold? While electrification promises a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient future, transitioning comes with real challenges.

Heavy Loads require Stronger Roads

Due to their heavy battery packs, electric trucks and buses tend to be heavier than their diesel counterparts. Hence, there is a push to increase axle weight limits on certain roads. Higher axle loads carry the risk of quicker road deterioration and will require greater investment in road maintenance and upgrading.

This means:

Maintenance and Repair Challenges

There will also be changes in maintaining and repairing electric heavy vehicles, such as:

Read more on How long do electric batteries last (Opens into a new website page).

The Workshop of the Future

Maintaining and repairing electric heavy vehicles requires a different skill set. Mechanics must understand high-voltage systems, battery technology, and sophisticated diagnostics. Workshops will need to invest in specialised tools, safety equipment, and ongoing training for their staff.

Read more on How workshops will need to adapt to electric vehicle repairs and services (Opens into a new website page).

This change presents both opportunities and challenges. It could be an opportunity to upskill the workforce, attract a new generation of mechanics interested in technology, and create a better-skilled, more competitive industry. The government will have a supporting role as it funds the training programs and supports the development of a skilled workforce in this new field.

Breaking Down the Hurdles

One of the more significant challenges associated with the general use of heavy electric vehicles is the building up of sufficient charging infrastructure. Long-haul routes will require high-powered charging spots, while areas such as cities can accommodate charging needs based on the requirements of delivery trucks and buses.

Read more on Everything you need to know about heavy vehicle charging (Opens into a new website page).

This means heavy investments in the public and private sectors. Government incentives, partnerships with energy companies, and private investment in charging infrastructure will be crucial in ensuring this transition is seamless for the trucking industry.

The Human Element

This switch to electric trucks will also affect truck drivers. Though the initial investment might be higher, the long-term operating costs of electric trucks are bound to be lower. This could increase trucking companies' profitability and potentially higher wages for drivers.

It is also important to understand the transition from diesel to electric driving. Not everybody likes change. Experienced drivers should feel comfortable with the training and confident about operating electric-powered vehicles. Other support measures may also be required to ease drivers' transition to new technologies and the changing trucking industry landscape.

A Sustainable Future

The future is not just about technology; it also means Australia will have a greener future. Lower emissions and cleaner air allow healthier lives. A transition from diesel to electrical will require government, industry, and community cooperation. The future is indeed exciting for the heavy vehicle transport industry.

This is a 2 part article.

Australia's vast and diverse landscape, scattered from bustling metropolises to remote outback towns, requires reliable and robust equipment. A mobile heavy vehicle hoist is an indispensable tool for maintenance, repairs, and inspections for businesses operating in the truck and bus maintenance and repair industries. However, navigating the vehicle hoist market can be challenging, with a wide choice of brands and models varying in quality and price.

This article will help you understand the different aspects of the mobile heavy vehicle hoist industry, ensuring you choose the right hoist for your needs and budget.

Understanding Australian Landscape

Australia's unique geography dictates different requirements for mobile hoists. In metros along the east and west coast, the workshop layout and space limitations can influence the choice of hoists. Also, the use of technology is more prevalent in metros, where there is a high demand for devices that work on wireless signals. In contrast, the outback demands heavy-duty models capable of handling harsh weather conditions. Hence, a robust hoist is preferred, which can withstand the rigours of the dusty and harsh outback.

A Balancing Act between Quality and Price

There are many hoist companies in Australia that differ in quality, features, and price. It is a well-known fact that most of the time, the cheapest purchase can work out more expensive in the long run. Cutting corners on quality can lead to costly consequences. While price can appear attractive during purchase, it is important to consider the build and safety features to ensure your team is confident to work on vehicles when they are hoisted in the air.

Below are some points you need to consider when choosing a mobile heavy vehicle hoist:

Lifting Capacity

Determine the maximum weight you need to lift, ensuring the hoist has sufficient capacity to handle your specific needs.

RUD Heavy Vehicle Hoists - Endurequip and Finkbeiner are built to handle a wide range of heavy vehicles. We offer lifting capacities from 30 to 170 tonnes in combination with up to 20 hoist sets.

Durable Construction

Choose hoists that are built with high-grade steel and robust components that are designed to withstand heavy loads and frequent use.

Both Endurequip (Made in Australia) and Finkbeiner (Made in Germany) hoists are built with quality steel, ensuring quality construction during manufacture. Endurequip is built to the strictest Australian standards (2550.9.1996, AS/NZS 2538:2004, ISO9001) and is the only Australian-made and Australia’s No. 1 mobile heavy vehicle hoist.

Advanced Safety Features

Check for multiple safety mechanisms, including emergency lowering systems and locking mechanisms, to ensure the safety of both personnel and equipment.

Both Endurequip and Finkbeiner include a range of safety features, such as emergency stops, remote control, and a keyed safety lock to ensure your team works safely and confidently on every heavy vehicle repair job.
