Continued from Part 1 on THE IMPORTANCE OF LOAD SECURING. Click here to read Part 1.

Tie-down Lashing

Tie-down lashing is the most common type of lashing for the transport of goods over the road. If the cargo is wide (if not wider than the truck tray), securing the load is only possible by vertical or slightly inclined tie-down lashing.

In the case of tie-down lashing, care must be taken to consider factors such as:

Note: Tie-down lashing only works if there is enough friction between the loading area and the load. For example, a steel load on a steel loading area does not offer enough friction which is why wooden supports or anti-slip mats should be used to increase friction.

Diagonal Lashing

For diagonal lashing, two angle plans (horizontal and vertical) should be considered and two angles defined. Diagonal lashing should be prioritised over tie-down lashing. This is because with diagonal lashing, the lashing equipment is not subject to pre-tensioning forces. The lashing equipment is only subjected to higher loads in the event of sudden braking, jerky start, or close cornering.

Are Lifting Points suitable for Lashing?

Lifting points are often installed for lashing purposes. However, lifting points are used primarily for lifting and therefore not marked with the permissible tensile force LC (Lashing Capacity - daN) but with their WLL (tonne). It is important to know that lashing points and lifting points are subject to different design factors. This is why you will find it easier to meet practical requirements with high-strength, tested, and field-proven RUD lashing points.

Weldable RUD lashing points are forged and available in blocks that can be easily welded. RUD lashing points with LC specification in daN can also be retrofitted to the vehicle carrier by certified welders. In addition to these weldable lashing points, RUD also offers an extensive range of boltable lashing points which can be used for load securing.

Tips for Skip Loaders - Optimum Load Securing with Angled Lashing

Load securing is always about the safety of people and the load. Also, having your load secure ensures that you do not run the risk of fines by the transport authorities. With RUD lashing products you be assured of safe transport of your cargo all the time.

As shown in the pictures, tie-down lashing of trough containers is advisable in V, X, or trapezoidal angles with a fixed connection at the lashing point and the suspension pin. A Y lashing should be avoided because the load will not be adequately secured with this type of lashing.

Finally

If you are transporting heavy machines or cargo, it is important to plan load securing during the design phase components. This means, installing lashing points on both the load and the loading area.

When transporting goods or equipment over the road, it is critical to ensure that the goods or equipment is securely fastened. Poor load securing could lead to accidents including human life, vehicle damage, and put road users at significant risk. In addition to the financial and human costs of accidents; there are other significant risks such as liability and negligence claims, criminal prosecution, legal action, higher insurance premiums, and damage to the company’s reputation.

Load Securing

Cargo on a vehicle is subject to acceleration forces when the vehicle on which it is traveling accelerates, brakes, or changes direction. If the cargo on the vehicle is not securely fastened, this means the risk of the cargo moving forward, sliding backward, or tipping sideways is very high. Hence, when a vehicle brakes, the force of momentum will cause the unrestrained cargo to continue moving in its original (forward) direction and thereby cause significant risk of damage to the cargo itself, the vehicle, and possible personal injury to the driver or other road users.

Loaded vehicles are subject to 0.8g deceleration in forward movement, and 0.5g deceleration in both backward and lateral (sideways) directions*. For example, a cargo weighing 10 tonnes is subject to 8 tonnes of forward force and 5 tonnes either sideways or backward. Hence, the cargo must be secured to prevent damage, injury, and risks.

Benefits of RUD Lashing Systems

RUD is the world leader and expert in lifting and lashing solutions. All RUD sling products are manufactured exclusively for lifting and load securing using cutting-edge technology. This is why our made-in-Germany innovative products set global standards for the lifting and lashing industry.

RUD offers a range of lashing points and lashing chains for optimal securing of cargo. Some of the popular RUD load-securing products for cargo transport are:

Load securing hints for heavy cargo

One of the solutions to secure heavy cargo is to use RUD lashing chains in double strands. (See picture below).

Endless-Chain Lashing

What happens if there are no lashing points on the cargo to secure the load directly? Using a shackle to connect the lashing chain to unsuitable lashing points is risky because it exposes the shackle to bending stresses. The best option in such cases is to use an Endless Chain that has the same Lashing Capacity (LC) as a lashing chain. And if the chain is “doubled-up”, sharp edges will not cause any problems.

An ICE-Endless-Chain can be used with an ICE-Multi-shortening claw (see last 2 pictures on right) to form a closed chain.

The advantages of such a configuration are:

Harsh environment of mines can make short work of tyres because of sharp-edged rocks and abrasive surfaces.

Sharp-edged rocks and aggressive surfaces can destroy tyres within a short period. Whether it be iron ore in the Australian desert, diamonds in a freezing arctic lake, copper and gold high in the South American Andes or coal seams and complex deposits deep underground are all just a few challenges confronting mining companies in the world today.

Tyre protection chains were first used in mining and quarrying industries worldwide in the 1950s and for the last 35 years in Australia. Tyre protection chains are now used commonly on quarry and mine sites because they not only reduce unplanned downtime of front-line production machines but also help ensure operator safety.

In mining, time is directly connected to productivity, and any unscheduled downtime is an unwanted and costly inconvenience. Earthmovers constantly face damages to tyres, due to punctures and sidewall damage from rock debris and accidental impact. Hence, investment in top quality tyre protection chains is necessary and it often proves beneficial in the long run.

Read how RUD provides mining solutions in our blog article Part 1 and Part 2.

Did you know RUD supplies 65% of the world's tyre protection chain market?

RUD is the inventor and the world leader in tyre protection chains which are manufactured in a state-of-the-art factory in southern Germany. RUD tyre protection chains are a close mesh of high-alloy, hardened steel chains which protect the tread and sidewalls of the tyres. The flexible design of the chains let them adjust to every tyre contour. In addition, a high level of self-cleaning prevents the tread mesh becoming filled and clogged, which helps to achieve optimum road grip and traction.

Why do you need tyre protection chains for your mine?

Below are 3 reasons why you should place your trust in a set of high-quality tyre protection chains from RUD:

1. Help to Maximise Safety

In wet and slippery environments, especially in mines, operating heavy vehicles can be very dangerous. Creating a safe work environment is a legal requirement and critical to your long-term success. At the end of the day, your team is your most valuable asset and safety should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds when conducting business.

RUD tyre protection chains are high quality, with case hardened alloy chains linked in patented designs to provide high level traction and ensure safe operation.

2. Help to reduce Operating Costs

Tyre protection chains protect tyre treads and sidewalls on wheeled machinery from damage and sudden-death failure. In both open and underground mines, the probability of the tyres hitting rock walls is high and as such, tyre protection chains can protect the tread and sidewall against cuts, punctures, and excessively high wear rates. This greatly reduces operating costs, which can be diverted into other areas of the business to improve operations.

RUD’s tyre protection chains:

3. Help to increase Flexibility and Overall Productivity

With fewer repairs comes less downtime, therefore boosting productivity and helping to increase efficiency for the mine. RUD tyre protection chains guarantee machine availability, increased efficiency, and overall productivity.

RUD tyre protection chains offer:

RUD has been manufacturing chains for tyres for over 70 years, working alongside many reputed mining companies. Today, RUD Tyre Protection and Traction Chains can be found in hundreds of mine sites across Australia.

Why should you use RUD bucket elevators?

Increased Efficiency

RUD bucket elevators are designed to increase efficiency in mining, power plants and fertiliser plants. By using RUD Chains, the bucket elevators can convey more materials over a short distance than traditional conveyors. They also allow for quicker loading and unloading of materials compared to other elevators. This helps to save time and money, as well as reduce downtime. The high capacity and efficient performance of these elevators makes them the perfect choice for any industrial application that requires reliable and efficient material movement.

Reduced Maintenance Costs

RUD bucket elevators are designed to reduce maintenance costs and increase efficiency. They offer a range of advantages over traditional conveyor systems, including decreased downtime. RUD chains provide superior strength and durability, ensuring that buckets remain secure and upright throughout the elevator's lifecycle. This reduces the need for frequent repairs and replacements, leading to significant savings in maintenance costs. Additionally, RUD chains are made from low-maintenance components, with no need for regular lubrication or adjustment. This further reduces the overall cost of ownership in mining, power plant and fertiliser plant operations.

Increased Capacity

RUD bucket elevators offer an efficient and reliable way to transport materials over long distances or at high capacities. By using RUD chains, the elevators can lift up to 90kg per chain link, providing a strong and reliable system with high throughput. This makes them the perfect choice for transporting materials in power plants, fertiliser plants, and other industrial applications. With the ability to easily handle large volumes of material, RUD bucket elevators can significantly increase production output, reduce downtime, and improve operational efficiency.

Improved Safety

RUD bucket elevators are designed with safety in mind. RUD Chains have a built-in protection system that prevents unauthorised access to the drive system, providing an additional layer of safety when handling heavy loads. The chain is designed with a breakage detection system that automatically stops the elevator and alerts personnel if there is an unexpected increase in the chain tension or an unexpected decrease in chain speed. This ensures that the chain and any material being moved are always under control. The guard rail system also helps safe operation by personnel, preventing accidental contact with the running chains and come equipped with emergency stop buttons.

Part 1 of a 2 part post.

Large industries in bulk material handling require safe and efficient methods of conveying materials with minimal risk of spillage. Selecting the right conveyor for the process depends on factors such as type of the bulk material, location of the feeding and discharge point and other special requirements such as mixing, hygiene, toxicity in the process, etc.

Bucket Elevators are an ideal method of conveying bulk materials which require vertical elevation. Bucket elevators can handle a wide variety of bulk materials and can be manufactured with steel which offers resistance against abrasion. They also can be completely enclosed, minimising pollution from toxic materials and dust.

RUD is a pioneer in the conveying industry and RUD bucket elevators are sought after world-wide. Some of the advantages of the RUD bucket conveyor systems are:

RUD chain bucket elevators can handle high temperature, abrasive, sticky or sharp bulk materials, compared to belt elevators.

The various types of RUD bucket elevators are:

Round link chain bucket elevators

These are predominantly used for conveying of powdery, granular, lumpy, and temperature-loaded bulk goods. The highly wear-resistant RUD chains and sprockets ensure reliability with abrasive materials. Depending on the application, chain bucket elevators are available in special designs with a constricted chain of buckets or with a central discharge.

Central chain bucket elevators

These are ideally suited for large capacity conveying of coarse dry bulk goods and offer maximum conveying reliability, even when handling charge fluctuations, high-temperature materials, and materials with large single edge lengths.

Belt type bucket elevators

These bucket elevators use textile or steel reinforced belts to transport materials in a continuous dust-free vertical process. Suitable adaptations can be done to handle coarse-grained or higher temperature materials.

Maximum Capacity, Tough Applications, Proven Design

RUD bucket elevators are designed to handle the toughest of materials, making them the ideal solution for a wide range application across many industries.

Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone - Charles M. Schulz

Christmas is the time of giving and we continue into our December Charity Champion in the #RUDstory series. The #RUDstory is about our employees, the charities they support each month, the values they hold dear, and their experience of teamwork, challenges and motivation at RUD.

#meetSallyanne - The RUD December Charity Champion on making a difference to children during Christmas through the #BeAnElf organisation.

Sallyanne Byrne works in Sales at Brisbane and is very passionate about giving to the community. The People & Culture team sat down with Sallyanne to understand why she is passionate about Christmas and how RUD is helping the community through this charity.

What is the charity and how do they serve the community?

BE AN ELF connects local children in need with businesses during the Christmas season. The children vary from new-born to fifteen years (some of the fifteen-year-old are local homeless youths who need some love). Not having food to eat or being homeless is a sign of poverty. All too often poverty is hidden ? and it is hard for many ordinary Australians to comprehend, let alone understand its impact.

For the last 16 years in December, BE AN ELF volunteers read letters written by children to Santa and arrange gift bags for distribution. The letters are mostly written by local kids or their mums or dads asking for 'new shoes', ' bed sheets’, ‘pillow' or other necessities.

The Wish Letter helps everyday Aussies like us to see what it means to be underprivileged. The Wish Letters are matched to the gifts by volunteer elves like the team at RUD Chains. We pick a few items from the list and then send it back to the ELF HEADQUARTERS to dispatch to families through Volunteer Deliverers by Christmas Eve.

Why is this charity important to you?

BE AN ELF is an opportunity for me and my family to give back to society and to children in need. I love the support of my RUD work colleagues who are very generous.  With COVID and increasing homelessness, the gift of giving is a small token that the RUD team and I can do to make a child feel loved on Christmas day.

I would love to see a well-balanced society and help children out of their impoverished upbringing. This is very important to me because it empowers me with a sense of worth during one of the most magical days of the year. And it all starts with a Wish Letter

The founder of BE AN ELF once told me, they delivered a Wish Letter to a family whose child requested a block of cheese and the child cried on receiving the cheese (which brought tears to my eyes). We also had child request a can of Aeroguard this year and a good painting book to paint pictures to sell to help his mum pay the bills. These are some of the things we take for granted and it saddens me that there are children suffering loneliness, frustration, and self?doubt. Christmas is the time of giving and through BE AN ELF, I want them to feel special like every child on this day.

What does the contributions of RUD and the wider community have on helping this cause?

When a child receives a gift which is the item they asked in the Wish Letter, the big smile is the reward. Nothing can replace the feeling you get when granting a wish such as a new pair of black school shoes or a Barbie or a pair of new undies (to replace the ones that were holey and pre-worn).  The difference we make at RUD through the BE AN ELF is the empowering contribution to society’s vulnerable and smallest members who most of the time end up neglected because they do not have a voice.

Any other comments on the charity?

I love spearheading the BE AN ELF and encouraging all my colleagues at RUD to contribute more wish letters. It makes me proud to working with generous colleagues for the same cause, making Christmas the most magical day of the year for all.

#meetLeigh - The RUD November Charity Champion promoting men’s health issues on prostate and testicular cancer and men’s suicide.

Leigh Dalton based at our Perth office has been an advocate for Movember and prioritising this charity in the RUD workplace since 2014. The People & Culture team sat down with Leigh to understand why he is passionate about Movember, how RUD is helping to create a culture of care and wellbeing and why mental health should be a priority in our daily lives and in the workplace.

Can you tell us about yourself and why is Movember so important to you?

The RUD Chains Tuesday Afternoon Moustache Club started in 2014 and is open for anyone to join.

The Movember mission of promoting conversations, action and raising funds around men’s physical and mental health is close to my heart. On a personal level, with a history of mental ill health, I believe I should take better care of myself. I also have two young sons who I do not wish to be subjected to mental health struggles. Finally, the bonus of growing a moustache is really a fun part of the month

What inspired you to be an advocate for this Charity?

While growing up, mental health was not something many people spoke about. Also, there were no available resources or support services like there are today. There have been some dark times in my life, and a few that I am grateful and feel blessed to have been able to walk away from. Because I almost didn’t!

Drawing from your own experience, can you give us some tips for managing mental health?

I have been lucky that through my life I had people who I could talk to, such as a few close friends and family members, my wife, an excellent GP and a great clinical psychologist. I have found talking to be the best medicine. People are, in my experience, only too happy to listen and help, as best as they can.

I always try to really encourage people to speak up if they are not doing well. There are many available services, including your GP who can help you access a Medicare rebate for sessions with a psychologist. Movember has a fantastic support page on their web page too https://au.movember.com/mens-health/get-support

Why do you think employee wellbeing is a priority at RUD?

As a company, RUD values culture and inclusion very highly through programs such as the Employee Assistance Program which is available to staff and their families and a fantastic Wellness Program.

RUD has been fantastic with their support of The RUD Chains Tuesday Afternoon Moustache Club. Every year more people sign up to be on the team and since 2014 we have raised $21,160 for Movember. This includes the dollar for dollar match that RUD generously does each year. I am confident that we will have another big year in 2022 too.

Why do you think others should join your quest for mental health?

As well as the money we raise, through Movember, I hope we can start conversations. Important conversations with our colleagues, our friends, and our families. I like to encourage everyone to stop being afraid or embarrassed and to speak up. I am glad I did, and I am sure in the long run, you will be too!

When it comes to lifting, securing, or lashing, the world looks to RUD which offers over 700 different lifting and lashing points for all requirements across mining, quarries, transport, and infrastructure.

All RUD lifting and load securing products are made in Germany. Many of the standards used in the lifting and load securing industry originated from RUD, such as the inspection stamp H1 for high strength chains in 1953, approval for Grade 8 (H1-8) in 1972 and approval for Grade 12 (D1-12) for round steel chains in 2007.

What is a Lifting Point?

A lifting point is the part which connects the load with the lifting device (such as a crane) to lift, turn, rotate, and move cargo. Lifting points are attached with hooks, shackles, and other connecting elements.

Different types of lifting points

Lifting points come in boltable and weldable options and all RUD lifting points are designed for a dynamic load of 20,000 load cycles.

Boltable Lifting Points

Boltable lifting points are used generally to lift loads. Because they are bolted, they are flexible and can be used in applications which require installation and removal when required.

Examples of Boltable Lifting Points are VLBG-PLUS, ACP-TURNADO, VRS-F STARPOINT, etc.

The advantages of Boltable Lifting Points:

Boltable lifting points also come in rotating and swivel options where the lifting point swivels in the direction of the load to offer additional flexibility and safety.

Weldable Lifting Points

Weldable lifting points are used when there is a requirement for a permanent connection on the load. These are permanently welded to the load for rotating and turning.

Examples of Weldable Lifting Points are VLBS, ABA, etc.

The advantages of Weldable Lifting Points:

Weldable lifting points also come in rigid options where the direction cannot be changed and hence used in single leg lifts.

What do I need to consider when using lifting points?

Macmahon, Australia's leading contractor supplying services in surface and underground mining, civil construction and resources engineering teamed up with RUD Chains, BKT Tires and TradeFaire International to collaborate on the world’s first custom loader tyre.

Mining sites require tyre protection chains on loaders to last longer and reduce downtime. However, the process of ordering tyres, getting them ready for protection chains and then installing the chains is a long process, which according to Macmahon involves:

According to Macmahon on the Custom Loader Tyre, this process is not only time-consuming but expensive. In addition, it is not environment friendly because the rubber shaved off from the tyres end up in landfills, contributing to waste. Macmahon found a way to improve sustainability practices by manufacturing custom tyres by teaming up with BKT Tires and TradeFaire International and RUD Chains to create the world’s first custom loader tyre.

The rolling circumference of the new tyre was ideal to fit RUD tyre protection chains, reducing the time used to shave the tyres and downtime.

Innovative Fertiliser Conveying Solutions by RUD

RUD Australia, the subsidiary of the German-based RUD Group, has been providing innovative conveying solutions for various industries since 1984.

Large projects, commercial operations and complex industrial environments benefit significantly from conveyor systems. The use of conveyor systems helps mitigate the risk of damage or loss to materials being handled. This enables the efficient mechanised handling and transport of materials. Conveyors are particularly useful in challenging industrial settings where there are sizeable workloads and extreme weather conditions considered adverse or unsafe for human labour.

Among the conveying solutions RUD is known for include spillage drag conveyors, apron conveyors, chain-driven belt feeders, bucket elevator conveyors and floatation tank conveyors.

In particular, RUD has developed optimal solutions designed to address the need for safe and efficient conveyor systems in the transport of fertiliser.

Unique challenges

During bulk handling and transport, there are ever-present difficulties that industries need to anticipate. These include dust, contamination, and spills that usually occur at the transfer points of conveyor systems. Moreover, there are other problems to look out for, such as abrasion, belt misalignment and damage.

However, what makes fertiliser handling and transport particularly challenging is the added burden of the fertiliser being sticky and moist – thereby posing additional complications to the handling process.

But with RUD’s engineered fertiliser conveying solutions and systems, dust formation, material spillage and the risk of explosions occurring in critical transfer sections are minimised significantly. Moreover, the chance of any misalignment, abrasion and belt damage happening is effectively eliminated.

Fertiliser conveying solutions up to the task

RUD’s innovative fertiliser conveying solutions include belt bucket elevators and spillage drag conveyors.

Bucket elevators

RUD bucket elevators enable the safe, quick, precise and efficient vertical transportation of fertiliser, cement, sand, gravel, potash and salt.  Quality componentry reduces downtime and allows for maximum efficiency.  Read more about this solution.

What is a Lifting Point?

Globally, RUD’s engineers are the experts in designing lifting-points which are designed to conduct lifts safely. Here at RUD Australia, our in-house engineers use that superior technology to design safe and efficient lifting solutions using RUD lifting points and RUD chains.

A lifting point refers to the connection between the load and the lifting or lashing means, or gear, used to lift or lashing down of the load. The RUD lifting point is used during the safe lifting of the load, as well as s secure point for lashing down of the load.

RUD’s lifting points are designed with quality, ergonomics, and safety in mind. The company holds 500 patents for its lifting point technology. Our lifting points feature more than 700 tested boltable and weldable lifting point variants capable of handling load ranges up to 250 t. They meet and exceed the most stringent requirements in all application areas when combined with our unique variety of ICE and VIP chain systems.

Our lifting products offer superior quality and safety in three distinct ways.

1. Boltable Lifting Points

RUD’s boltable lifting points are designed to handle a dynamic load of 20,000 cycles and are tested at an overload of 50 per cent. All load-bearing parts are crack and load tested in compliance with International and Australian Standards and have WLL ranges from 100 kg to 250 t. RUD lifting points are available in all common thread dimensions (metric, inch, UNC, UNF etc.).

2. Weldable Lifting Points

RUD weldable lifting points are designed for maximum load and are available for WLL ranging from 600 kg to 100 t, they provide safety in all loading directions. All the load-bearing parts have been crack-tested and load-tested in accordance with EN 1677. Our popular ABA and VLBS weld-on lifting points can be loaded in all directions and are virtually indestructible. They include patented wear markings inside and out.

3. Lashing Points

Correct — and safe — load securing begins in the design phase. RUD engineers understand the importance of lashing points for the safe transport of heavy loads. Our lashing systems are made using the most advanced technology available to ensure the safe operation in all weather conditions and are designed to comply with International and Australian standards and are trusted by international and local Defence Forces.
